Golf holidays in Austria: Kitzbuhel and surrounds

Home of the legendary Hahnenkamm Downhill ski race, this old town transforms itself in the summer as a stylish centre for golfers, adventure enthusiasts and walkers. Its pretty, cobbled and traffic-free centre offers visitors many up-market shops and pavement cafés in which to sit back, relax and enjoy the surrounding scenery.

KitzbuhelKitzbuhel dates back over 700 years and is a fascinating place to explore. Aside from the local golf courses and the superb hotel facilities, Kitzbuhel also offers many other activities including mountain biking, tennis, horse-riding, walking and also boasts the beautiful Lake Schwarzsee, a popular bathing spot for locals and visitors.

Promoting itself as the golfing centre of the Alps, KitzbĂĽhel offers two excellent 18-hole courses and two 9-hole courses with many more courses within easy driving distance. Of these the Golf Club KitzbĂĽhel-Eichenheim gets a special mention for the way the course has been crafted from the mountainside and for its superb, stylish clubhouse. This course should be on your ‘must-play’ list.

Salzburg and Innsbruck are just over one hour’s drive and Munich is around two hours from Airport to resort.

St Johann in Tirol

Just over 10 minutes drive from Kitzbuhel is the town of St Johann in Tirol. The attractive centre of the resort is dominated by a twin-spired church and many of the old buildings feature large frescoes. There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and shops and St Johann is well placed for exploring the golf courses of Ellmau, Kitzbuhel and further afield towards Salzburg and Zell am See.

Golfing in Ellmau

Ellmau is a small and pretty, unspoilt village which falls under the gaze of the beautiful Wilder Kaiser mountains. As well as other attractions and activities, Ellmau also has its own 27-hole golf course. One of the top hotels in the region, the superb 4* Sport Hotel Ellmau offers a wealth of facilities for the visitor and is an ideal base for taking on the Wilder Kaiser Golf course.

Golf Club Kitzbuhel-Schwarzsee 6104 metres, Par 72

Golf Club Kitzbuhel-SchwarzseeWith the mountains of the Wilder Kaiser, Kitzbüheler Horn and Hahnenkamm on all sides, the course starts with a long par 5 and a relatively flat front nine before gradually climbing up on the back nine to the precipitous par 3 16th (the mousetrap). Long, left or right of this target green and you can guarantee your lie will be far from flat. A great test of golf for all handicappers and, once back at the clubhouse, you can look forward to sitting on the club’s terrace with its fantastic views of the majestic Wilder Kaiser mountains.

Golf Club Kitzbuhel-Eichenheim 5950 metres, Par 71

Golf Club Kitzbuhel-EichenheimRanked in the top two courses in Austria, this is an absolute gem and a must for all golfers! US architect Kyle Phillips has sculpted the mountainside to create some truly stunning holes with clever use of the terrain and its natural elevations. The course maintenance is immaculate and a drink in the imposing and exclusive clubhouse perfectly rounds off what will no doubt have been a challenging and hilly golfing experience. Buggies recommended!

Please note that GC Kitzbuhel-Eichenheim is not a member of the Golf Alpin Green Fee scheme.

Golf Club Wilder Kaiser (Ellmau) 27 holes, Par 72

Golf Club Wilder Kaiser (Ellmau)Named after the mighty Wilder Kaiser mountains under whose gaze the course is set, this 27 hole course offers much more of a challenge than at first glance. The course has matured a great deal since it was built and enjoys an idyllic valley setting with the mountains as a backdrop. The well-kept greens hide some cheeky undulations and will keep you on your toes all the way to the Golf Club terrace where you can sit back, relax and enjoy the magnificent views.

Golf Club Kitzbuheler Alpen Westendorf 5950 metres, Par 72

Golf Club Kitzbuheler Alpen WestendorfAfter six years in planning and preparation and opening in July 2013, the Golf Club Kitzbuheler Alpen Westendorf is a welcome addition to the 18 hole courses on offer in this region.

Located just outside the pretty Tyrolean village of Westendorf, the Championship course offers 5 par 5’s and 5 par 3’s and provides a great test of golf in rolling alpine countryside.

Golf Club Kaiserwinkl (Koessen) 5645 metres, Par 72

Golf Club Kaiserwinkl (Koessen)On the opposite side of the Wilder Kaiser mountains to Ellmau and KitzbĂĽhel, golf architect Donald Harradine has carved this course out of the pine forest to provide a great challenge for the golfer where accuracy rather than length off the tee is required. The pine trees flanking most holes add to the seclusion and character of each hole and the greens hide a few surprises for the misread putt.
