Golf and active holidays in Salzburg and Salzkammergut

Salzburg is known throughout the world as the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as a city of incomparable architectural beauty and as a high ranking cultural city. Its historic centre was named as a World Heritage Site in 1997 and Salzburg offers a rich variety of cultural events throughout the year. Salzburg also provided the backdrop to the Hollywood movie ‘The Sound of Music’ which has further enhanced Salzburg’s universal appeal.

Golf Mondsee, SalzkammergutSalzburg is perfect for a short city and golf break and highly recommended for a visit in-between rounds if you plan to stay outside of Salzburg. The city offers a great variety of designer shops, a vibrant café and cocktail scene and cuisine ranging from traditional Austrian fare to international gourmet food.

To the east of Salzburg lies the Salzkammergut Lake District which encompasses the lakes of Mondsee, Wolfgangsee and Fuschlsee. The hills are more rolling and less mountainous here than further west and the golf courses are arguably some of the best available with the ‘Golf Alpin’ card.

You can either opt to stay in Salzburg – ideal for a short break and for the vibrant nightlife - or the peaceful lakeside resorts of Fuschl and St Wolfgang.

Golf and active holidays in Salzkammergut: Fuschl

This small and pretty traditional village lies on the shores of lake Fuschl and is surrounded by rolling forested hills. The lake boasts crystal clear water and only sailing, rowing or electric boats are allowed on the lake. Most hotels have a private beach with sun-loungers and the old hunting lodge (Hotel Jagdhof) at the far end of the lake boasts a Michelin starred restaurant with excellent service, fine dining and panoramic lake views. From nearby St. Gilgen at the top of Lake Wolfgangsee, there are boat trips across the lake.

Golf and active holidays in Salzkammergut: St Wolfgang

St. Wolfgang was once an important place of pilgrimage and enjoys an idyllic lakeside setting on Lake Wolfgangsee. The pretty village has a cobbled pedestrianised centre with plenty of small shops, cafes and restaurants to explore and there are numerous water-based activities available on the lake.

St Wolfgang is a larger and more historic village than Fuschl and offers plenty of cultural attractions.

Golf courses in and around Salzburg

Below, we have profiled some of the more popular courses around Salzburg and in the Salzkammergut Lake District.

Golf Club Mondsee 5952 metres, Par 72

Golf Club MondseeWhilst all of the courses within the ‘Golf Alpin’ scheme offer top quality golf, Mondsee is without doubt one of the better member courses and is well worth the trip even if you are staying outside of the Salzburg area. It is one of the longest courses in the area and is laid out around Lake Drachensee. Solid and accurate tee shots over water are required on the closing four holes which have been the downfall of many a good score card. The clubhouse features a ladder into the lake if you fancy a refreshing post-match plunge before the 19th!

Golf Club Salzburg - Eugendorf 5675 metres, Par 72

Golf Club Salzburg - EugendorfThe Golf Club Salzburg - Eugendorf is the closest course to Salzburg airport (less than 15 minutes drive) and offers an American style layout with plenty of approach shots over water. This championship course plays long yet is reasonably forgiving off the tee. Far more important here are your approach shots to the greens all of which are well guarded and some of the finest we have come across in Austria.

Golf Club Gut Altentann 6103 metres, Par 72

Golf Club Gut AltentannThe great man Jack Nicklaus passed this way once creating the Golf Club Gut Altentann which is now ranked in the top three courses in Austria and has hosted the Austrian Open. Behind him he left his trademark hillocks, fairway undulations and some truly enormous bunkers. With a bit of water thrown in for good measure and a relaxed clubhouse created from an old vaulted roofed farmhouse, this course really should be on your ‘must play’ list.

Golf Club Salzkammergut 5676 metres, Par 72

Golf Club SalzkammergutOnce played by Prince Edward in 1937 and one of the oldest and established courses in Austria, this is a mature course set over undulating parkland. Beautiful old trees line the fairways and this course makes excellent use of the natural contours of the land. As we have come to find in Austria, the greenkeeping is of the highest standard with immaculate greens.
